Forex Pairs Explained

A forex pair compares two currencies. The first currency is the base currency, the second is the quote currency, and the price shows how much of the quote currency buys one unit of the base currency.

What a forex pair shows

A forex pair is written as two currency codes, such as EUR/USD or GBP/JPY. The first code is the base currency. The second code is the quote currency.

If EUR/USD trades at 1.1000, it means one euro is worth 1.1000 US dollars. When the pair rises, the base currency is strengthening against the quote currency.

Major pairs

Major pairs include the US dollar and tend to be the most liquid. Common examples include EUR/USD, USD/JPY, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, AUD/USD, USD/CAD, and NZD/USD.

Because these markets are heavily traded, they usually have tighter spreads and more frequent analysis than smaller currency pairs.

Minor and cross pairs

Minor pairs, also called crosses, do not include the US dollar. Examples include EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, and AUD/NZD.

Crosses can be useful when a trader has a specific view on two non-US economies, but spreads and volatility can be different from major pairs.

Exotic pairs

Exotic pairs usually combine a major currency with a smaller or emerging-market currency, such as USD/TRY, USD/MXN, or USD/ZAR.

They can move sharply around inflation, rate decisions, political risk, and liquidity changes, so position size and spread costs matter even more.

How to compare pairs before trading

Check liquidity, spread, session timing, economic calendar risk, and whether the pair is trending or mean-reverting. A clean chart is not enough if a major data release is minutes away.
