Bitcoin Association, the Switzerland-based non-profit global industry organization that pushes for the enterprise adoption of the BSV blockchain, has announced Bitcoin Phone, CATN8 and TKS Pnt as the BSV Hackathon finalists.

The top three applications selected all fall under the peer-to-peer theme of this year’s BSV Hackathon, coupled with the requirement to leverage the recently released SPV Channels and the Merchant API (mAPI). Using these two new technologies make this year’s blockchain competition harder than before.

Despite this challenging task, entrants have been able to produce P2P applications that have impressed the judges.

“This iteration of the Bitcoin SV Hackathon has once again turned in numerous strong entries, each with a unique take on how best to leverage the peer-to-peer aspects of Bitcoin’s original design and the BSV network’s new SPV Channels implementation of P2P capabilities. With a challenging theme and complex requirements to remind developers about the often-forgotten P2P aspect of Satoshi’s intended Bitcoin system, it’s been impressive to see the different approaches employed by our participants,” Bitcoin Association Founding President Jimmy Nguyen said.

The BSV Finalists

• Developed by Joe Thomas from Canada, Bitcoin Phone draws inspiration from the simple yet functional Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP). It makes use of the new Voice-over-Bitcoin (VOB) protocol that permits live voice chats between participants on the BSV blockchain through BSV transactions. “The development of Bitcoin Phone required the creation of an impressive array of modules which handle all aspects of the broadcast and listening actions of the protocol.”

• CATN8 is the P2P application submitted by Marcel Gruber, Dave Foderick and Thor. It is an online video streaming platform that offers all the features of an SPV wallet and uses micropayments. Nicknamed the “Money Button of video players,” it is largely influenced by Section 8 of the Bitcoin white paper. “The service had to overcome numerous challenges in realising its true SPV implementation, including the construction of mechanisms to maintain and update a list of block headers, and the design of an SPV wallet that maintains proofs and generates transactions.”

• Created by Meta Taro from Japan, TKS Pnt is a point tokenization system made for merchants their customers to keep track of and use points and tokens earned. “Merchants can integrate their services into the application directly, offering informative store pages and the ability to integrate with other storefronts or services through the TKS Pnt service.”

One representative from each of these three BSV Hackathon finalists will be given the chance to present their P2P applications in front of a live audience at the next CoinGeek Conference that will be happening on October 5 to 7 at The Sheraton, Times Square in New York City.

The three finalists are already guaranteed prize money, with the first place getting $50,000, the second place $30,000 and the third place $20,000 in BSV. In addition to the prize money, the finalists will also get to socialize with top executives and professionals in the BSV ecosystem, and may even get to meet potential investors.
