Samsung Innovations: Mining Bitcoin with Your Smartphone

Since their humble beginnings, smartphones have made their way into almost everyone’s daily life. These devices can be used for thousands of different uses; from small tasks to practically running our lives for us. Unfortunately, these devices quickly become obsolete and rarely make it past the 5-year mark. Usually, we get a new phone and the old one simply ends up in a shoe box.

Sometimes, we keep them in case of emergency. But, for the most part, these old phones never get used and are as good as trash. This leads to a major problem. These unused devices created thousands of tons of garbage that keeps piling at an unprecedented rate.

Mining? Bitcoin? with Old Smartphones

With the Bitcoin? revolution underway, giants like Samsung have come up with a system that will allow them to use old smartphones to create a Bitcoin? mining? station.

This new “upcycling” project will use devices that are no longer being used and install a new operating system on them to create a network of up to 40 smartphones. This will allow the creation of a mining? stations.

Aimed at developers, Samsung unveiled their new plan at a conference in San Francisco as a plan to keep people from selling their old phones or throwing them out. The best part is that if you keep it, you will be able to use it for something practical.

Off the Beaten Path

Now, this project still has a long way to go. Technicians are currently working to make this system compatible with newer Samsung models but have still only been able to make it available on older models such as the Galaxy S5. However, they are enthusiastic about future developments of this technology.

Although Samsung refused to answer any questions, we still know that about 8 Galaxy 5 phones, networked together, can be much more efficient than a traditional desktop computer.

The telecommunications giant is soon planning to reveal on an open internet source their programs and plans for the project. There are still a few problems that need to be ironed out. For example, when dealing with older phones, the builder often creates barriers to stop third-party installations on their devices.

On the website Github, you can use their services to install programs that will “jailbreak” your phone for you. Once your phone has been “jailbroken” and the Android system has been erased, you will then be able to choose your phone’s new mission and what you want to use it for. This platform is meant to be used by everyone to create their own projects or programs.

This project and its idea to help recycle old phones is something that is totally new. It promises less trash in our landfills, which is something that will keep most consumers and the environment happy.
